First we visited the monastery of Hozoviotissas-- we walked up a slippery staircase of 340 steps (Yes! Someone in our group counted them...)-- slippery because they are well worn and some of them marble. I slipped a couple of times coming down. This monastery has one of the most spectacular locations of any in Greece or the world because it is literally on the side of the volcanic mountain-- a sheer drop off! It's like they thought to themselves, "Let's find the most difficult place on this island to get to, much less build on and build our monastery there!" hahaha! In reality, this location provided safety for them, because it was so hard to get to but I have no idea how they got all the materials up there to build it, much less how they built it! We had to take a break after climbing those stairs as it was a pretty hefty workout! The view from all the way up there was amazing though! Only a few monks live there but it has 50 rooms! We got a group picture in front of the very low door we had to bend over to get through! (They must've been pretty short back in the day!) Afterward, we visited Chora, the capital of Amorgos which is a medieval mountain village 400 meter above the sea surrounded by windmills! Another great day of exploring and being covered in sweat! I arranged before the trip for Kristen Maskovich to send out the Bridal Shower Evite invitations today and I'm SO GLAD that I did as there was NO WAY I would've been able to send them-- I had no service at all!
