The drive to Salzburg was so picturesque! I wanted to take a picture of everything! They were rolling hills with sunflower fields everywhere! They grow well here! There were also a lot of vineyards as that is a main crop as well. It is so beautiful!
This is a Benedictine Monastery along the Danube River on the way to Durnstein.
We followed the Danube for most of the way to Salzburg.
This was our first stop on the way. This is a small medieval town of about 450 people!
I could've stayed here all day-- maybe our whole trip. It was definitely my favorite! I wish I could've stuck this quaint, un-touristy place in my back pocket!
Durnstein Fortress...King Richard the Lionhearted of England was imprisoned here!
This yellow building is a wine cellar. Grape terraces and these wine cellars
are all over this countryside!
Steep, narrow street to Durnstein.
Looking back down the same street...toward the Danube.
(Grape terraces in the background.)
Main street in Durnstein.
I.LOVE.THIS.PLACE!
Town Hall courtyard.
I love the cute hanging signs...these were all over Austria,
but they were especially cute on this little medieval road!
This was a lookout point at the top of that street...
...with the Danube behind.
Now in the town of Melk, walking up the stairs to the Melk Abbey.
A map of the Melk Abbey, now used as a private school for middle school and high school.
It was rebuilt in the Baroque style when the prior Gothic style burned down.
The abbey was on a hill and this is looking down into the town of Melk. Five doors
down from the church is where we ate lunch. It's the yellow building with the red roof.
This picture was taken from the balcony of the abbey.
Yellow building where we had our group Edward Jones lunch.
The church at the Melk Abbey.
Lunch with Leah and Jeff from Oregon. We had schnitzel AGAIN!
Outside the restaurant with the abbey on the hill in the background.
I especially LOVE those flowers on that balcony! So European!
Had to get a closer shot!
We arrived in Salzburg at a very quaint old 1400's hotel called "Goldener Hirsh".
This is our room key! It weighed a TON!
The front desk required you to check it in when you left... I don't think anyone ever has a problem with that policy!! We were glad to let them hold it for us!
Me giving the key to the very friendly hotel staff. The shelving behind him is where they hang the key just like in old times! We were in room 5 directly above this reception area. They were so friendly here-- they greeted you in German every time you came or left!
Out in front of our hotel. We walked to the Edward Jones Theme Evening and Dinner as a group.
Fountain in Salzburg square where Maria sang "I Have Confidence" in the movie
The Sound of Music. (Residenzplatz Square)
Walking up the hill to our restaurant.
The gate to the cemetery in the Sound of Music!
The restaurant sign...
Tonight's entertainment! They were very lively and it got livelier and livelier
the more beer that was consumed!
Our dinner-- 4 course Austrian food. It was yummy and I was very full! Bill ordered a tall glass of orange juice and another lady at our table followed suite and said she'd rather have that than all the alcohol!! We agreed! The rest of the table were a bunch of FUN Texans
and they were definitely drinking!
Austrian "maypole" dance. (EJ guy holding the pole!)
The Alpenhorn! We saw these in Switzerland years ago, and didn't know they had them in Austria too! I guess they both have the Alps!
Bill went up the stairs to get these pictures of the huge hall where we ate.
The Salzburg Fortress up on the hill.
You can see this anywhere in Salzburg. (This is a fountain at the bottom of the hill we
passed as we walked back from our dinner.)
