When in Rome! Day 2
2.19.2024

We had our meetings this morning and then this afternoon we went on a walking tour of the city. First we walked to the famous Spanish Steps-- seeing one of the many obelisks on the way. At the bottom of the steps is a fountain in the shape of a boat. We saw another obelisk and the first McDonalds in Europe on the way to the Roman aqueduct. We had to go through a mall to see it. It was inside one of the stores there. This is still in use and functioning in Rome! (The Romans knew how to build stuff to last!) We saw more of it on our way to the Pantheon. The picture of the wooden door is how they got into it to service it. I don't know if this is still in use...probably not. The buffalo on the top of the arch in the doorway belongs to the family that made the buffalo mozzarella. Next we went to the Trevi Fountain-- there were people everywhere, so it was hard to get a good picture of it. We got gelato here in the square, and it was pretty good! I got chocolate, passion fruit and berry on a sugar cone. We walked through a beautiful mall with a gorgeous mosaic tile floor. We came across another... you guessed it... obelisk made of carrara marble. It had some beautiful historical carvings in it. The next stop was the Pantheon. It's almost 2,000 years old! It's crazy how it is still standing!!! We saw another fountain on the way home representing the four corners of the world. We saw an old roman arch that was an entrance into the city-- it was down a story or two! There are many layers to this city! Tonight we went to dinner at La Bruschetta and had homemade pasta and pizza for dinner. The pasta was a basil and pine nuts sauce on noodles with chicken. The pizza was sausage and mushrooms with a tomato sauce. It was pretty good! We walked home and got some things (water) at the supermarket on the way home.
