First Full Day in Slovenia-- Meetings and Piran!
7.18.2023

Today we had our meetings with Jones and then we went on a tour of Piran, which is a town just up the road from Portoroz, where our hotel is. We went on a guided walking tour of the medieval town which is a walled city with mostly Venetian architecture as the Venetians ruled during most of the time it was being built. The streets are the very typical narrow ones with cobble stones and the homes have red-tiled roofs. It had the typical square with a watch tower and clock and LOTS of chapels and churches! We got a tour of Giuseppe Tartini’s home where he was born. He was a famous composer and lived 1692-1770. We got a concert with a very accomplished violinist as part of the tour which was a complete surprise! I could’ve listened to her for another hour! She played some of his pieces which were extremely difficult. You could tell she was very good and had spent many, many hours practicing and perfecting her talent! She was GOOD!! Instead of taking the tour bus back to the hotel afterward, we decided to stay and poke around the city a bit more and have dinner there. We ate at a pasta place where the lady was making the homemade fresh pasta in the window as we walked by her earlier in the tour. She was still there making pasta when we went back to the restaurant to eat dinner there! The pasta was REALLY good, and we sampled several fruit juices with it for dinner. After dinner we decided to not wait for the shuttle to take us back and just walk back to the hotel. It was very pretty and so scenic as we walked along the coastline but it was VERY humid! When we got to the hotel, we were drenched in sweat!! It was fun though and we got some exercise in the process!!
