Utah Valley Half Marathon Here We Goooooo!!!!
6.10.2017

We had a BLAST running this race! It was so much fun to run it with such a big group of family and extended family. There were 11 total in our group-- Us (4), Allison, Frank and Stacee, Stan and Ashley and Jenell and Mary! We had fun talking pictures before and after the race and the race photographers even got a few of us during the race. Katelyn ended up crossing the finish line first, after making us wait for her at some port-a-potties for almost 10 minutes, and then she DUSTED us and took off! (I would've PR'd if we hadn't waited, as my time was 2 hours and 10 minutes...in fact, I probably would've had under a 2 hour time!) That's what I get for waking her up all those mornings we trained together and pulling her behind out of bed! Then Megan and I stayed together the whole way until about the last 1/2 mile where she decided to dust me too and sprint to the finish line. We both felt really good and had a great run...except she said that her feet were hurting during it. I think that's probably because she didn't really train on long runs-- the most she did before the race was like 6-8 miles. I think she did really well considering she only had 3 weeks to prepare! Then I came across the finish line and then Bill, who was hurting as he aggravated a prior injury to his knee from when he was training for this race. He stayed off of it as soon as it happened until the race, but it wasn't long enough. He crossed the finish line and his knee said, "Nope! No more!!" We picked him up at the medical tent and took him straight to the ER where they took X Rays to make sure it wasn't torn, bleeding or too much swelling that might indicate a really bad injury. They couldn't do much more for us and sent us away with a leg brace and crutches! (We found out later that it's nothing serious and that it will just need a lot of rest. All they need to do is stick a needle in to drain all the fluid.) I loved everything about this race! I felt sooooo good the entire time and only struggled about that last 1/2 mile that Megan sprinted! Ugh! It was a beautiful course down Provo Canyon...the river was over capacity and running fast next to us the whole way and the Canyon Mountains were SOOOOO green! It was truly breathtaking! I loved running past Bridal Veil Falls too. All the snow they got this winter made for a beautiful race this morning-- and PERFECT weather-- in the 50's which I think is perfect running weather! Everyone in the family finished and all of us felt a deep sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Bill, even though he finished injured, even felt it and was glad that he stuck with it. Katelyn and Mary ended up taking 2nd and 3rd in their age group and got a piece of the podium afterward and some extra hardware! That was totally unexpected and fun! (She totally could've gotten 1st place if she'd taken care of the potty BEFORE the race and I would've PR'd... oh well...) It was a great day...and we are all REALLY sore. Later on, after Bill and I got back from the ER, and everyone else had a chance to shower and get cleaned up, we went over to Stan's house for Adam to open his mission call! He's going to Guayaquil, Ecuador! He's super excited. After, we headed over to a burger joint and all got big, juicy hamburgers. We were all starved and it tasted so amazing!
